A Space Story 31

Janessa Kepshawn was going to the commissary for breakfast.  She heard singing.
Zankoku na tenshi no you ni
Shonen yo, shinwa ni nare
Janessa was not familiar with the language the song was in.  She knew Spanish and some French but this was neither.  Janessa saw Junitha Findragon singing.
“Greetings Janessa,” said Junitha interrupting her song.
“That was a nice song,” said Janessa, “that language was that… I’m sorry I don’t even know what your first language is.  What do they speak in Pakistan?”
“They speak a lot of different languages in Pakistan,” said Junitha, “my first language is Punjabi.  But that song I was singing is in Japanese.”
            “You speak Japanese?”
“I speak a lot of languages.  Do you want to get breakfast?  I hear there’s jello in the commissary.”
“I didn’t think they served jello.”
“They don’t I just wanted to say that.  Memory can be a strange thing.”
            “Are you doing okay?”
“Nothing the most important meal of the day can’t fix.”

Dr. Vandis Bane lied on her office couch and stroked Ryoko Jeagan’s soft long dark hair.
“I should probably get going before your next appointment arrives,” said Ryoko.
“Do not worry,” replied Dr. Bane, “I always leave plenty of time for you so we will not be interrupted.
“Still I have my own duties to attend to,” said Ryoko as she got up and began dressing.
“Zai has asked us to attend some kind of presentation this afternoon,” said Ryoko, “I need to talk to him before that.”
“Why would you want to talk to that creature?”
“Because I want to be the best.  If I am going to be the best I need to learn from the best.  I have never seen a fighter like Zai before.  I am going to ask him to teach me.  And Mr. Kerrigan wants me to get close to Zai.”
            “Close to him how?”
“Do not worry.  I am just going to try to gain his confidence to distract him if I can.”
“Why would you need to do that Ryoko?”
“Because Mr. Kerrigan has a plan.  I do not know all the details but there may be a way for us to sever Zai’s access to the ships systems and take control of the Daedlus for ourselves.”
“Please do not do this Ryoko.  That monster could kill us all.”
“We know he does not want to do that now.  He did not come here to kill us.  I think whatever this thing is he claims to serve must have ordered him not to kill unless it was absolutely necessary.  Why else would he say he was willing to take us back to Earth even if he does find us unworthy in his judgment?  I will be fine.  All I ever wanted was to be the best.  But now I think I want something more.”
            “What is that?”
“I want a future.  I want a real future.  I want a future with you.  And I will not take the risk that Zai finds us unworthy.  If I have to I will learn from him and take what he teaches me and turn it against him.  Trust me Vandis.”
Ryoko Jeagan gave her lover one last kiss before she was gone.  Vandis Bane sat alone in her office.  Her lover had asked her for trust.  But how much trust had she given?  What if Ryoko knew about her background with Purity?  That thought more than any other frightened her.  It was a strange thing.  Ryoko Jeagan was the living embodiment of everything Vandis Band had spent her life standing against.  Before coming on this ship Ryoko had just been an idea, and an enemy.  Then she met her.  This lovely younger woman that desired her so much.  Vandis Bane was in love and she was also frightened.  Maybe Zai did not want to kill anyone.  But there was no doubt in Dr. Bane’s mind that if they crossed him, Zai would kill them all anyway.
